Resin Driveway Maintenance Guide

Resin driveways are one of the lowest-maintenance surfaces you can choose. Here's everything you need to keep yours looking pristine year after year.

Clean resin driveway maintenance
A properly installed resin bound driveway requires very little maintenance — typically just an annual jet wash and occasional weed treatment around edges.

Why Resin Driveways Are Low Maintenance

Unlike block paving (which develops weeds in every joint) or gravel (which scatters and requires raking), a resin bound driveway presents a sealed, smooth surface with minimal opportunity for weeds to take hold and no loose material to spread. The resin encapsulates the aggregate completely, creating a durable surface that resists most staining and is easy to clean.

Routine Cleaning

Regular Sweeping or Blowing

The simplest and most important maintenance task is keeping your driveway free of leaf litter, debris, and organic matter. Fallen leaves left sitting on a resin surface can cause tannin staining over time, particularly in autumn. A quick sweep or leaf blower once a week during autumn, and monthly otherwise, is all that's needed.

Annual Jet Wash

An annual pressure wash is the most effective way to keep a resin driveway looking its best. This removes accumulated dirt, algae, moss, and traffic film that dulls the surface over time.

  • Use a medium-pressure setting (1,200–1,800 PSI) — high pressure can dislodge aggregate if the surface is older or the resin has begun to degrade
  • Use a rotary/turbo nozzle for even, efficient cleaning
  • Work in consistent, overlapping passes to avoid streaking
  • Keep the nozzle at least 30cm from the surface
  • A dedicated patio and driveway cleaner chemical used alongside the pressure washer gives a noticeably better result

Spot Cleaning

For bird droppings, oil spills, or other localised marks, clean as promptly as possible — fresh stains are always easier to remove than set ones. A stiff brush with warm soapy water or a dedicated driveway cleaner will handle most marks.

Removing Specific Stains

Stain TypeRecommended Treatment
Bird droppingsWarm water + stiff brush. Clean promptly as acidic droppings can etch resin over time.
Oil / greaseAbsorbent cat litter first (for fresh spills), then a degreaser or washing up liquid. Rinse thoroughly.
Rust marksSpecialist rust remover for resin surfaces. Avoid acidic rust removers that can damage resin binder.
Tannin (leaf stains)Pressure wash with patio cleaner. May require repeat treatment for older stains.
Algae / green growthPatio algaecide applied before pressure washing. Treat in spring or autumn.
Paint / adhesiveConsult your installer — solvent-based cleaners can damage the resin binder if not used carefully.
Chewing gumFreeze with ice pack then carefully scrape. Warm water to remove residue.

Weed Control

A correctly installed resin bound driveway should be effectively weed-free through the main surface area. However, weeds can occasionally appear around the edges where the resin meets a border, wall, or kerb — particularly where organic matter accumulates in the join.

  • Treat edge growth with a path weedkiller (glyphosate-based) applied carefully to avoid contact with the resin surface itself
  • A twice-yearly treatment (spring and autumn) is usually sufficient
  • If weeds are appearing through the main body of the surface, this suggests a sub-base or installation issue — contact your installer

Seasonal Maintenance

Spring

  • Annual jet wash to remove winter grime and algae growth
  • Apply algaecide if green growth is present
  • Inspect edges and borders for any weed emergence
  • Check for any frost damage (cracking or delamination) — rare but worth noting

Summer

  • Resin surfaces can become soft in very high temperatures (above 35°C) — avoid parking heavy vehicles or placing sharp objects for prolonged periods during extreme heat
  • Occasional sweeping to keep surface clear of debris

Autumn

  • Regular leaf clearing — the most important autumn task
  • Apply weed treatment to edges before winter
  • Clear gutters and ensure drainage is working to avoid waterlogging around edges

Winter

  • Resin surfaces handle frost and ice well — the permeable nature allows water to drain rather than pool and freeze on the surface
  • Use plastic or rubber snow shovels — metal blades can scratch the surface
  • Rock salt and most de-icing products are safe to use on resin bound driveways, but rinse off promptly in spring
  • Avoid sharp metal ice scrapers

Re-Sealing — Is It Necessary?

Unlike some driveway surfaces, resin bound driveways do not routinely require re-sealing. The resin binder is the structural element of the surface, not a topcoat. However, if your driveway is 10–15 years old and showing signs of surface wear, some installers offer a specialist rejuvenation treatment that can restore colour and surface integrity without full replacement.

If in doubt, have your driveway assessed by a professional before paying for any treatment — most well-installed driveways simply need a good clean rather than any chemical treatment.

Maintenance Cost Summary

Annual Jet Wash (DIY)
£0 – £30
Annual Jet Wash (Professional)
£80 – £150
Weedkiller (annual)
£10 – £25
Minor Repairs
£100 – £300
Over a 20-year lifespan, the total maintenance cost of a resin driveway is significantly lower than block paving or tarmac, which typically require repointing, weed treatment, and periodic resurfacing.
